The project of electronic artist Bruno Sres, MYMK presents ’Jeopardy’ - a glimpse at distinct musical explorations leaning towards a vision finally realized.
Unwilling to spend long amounts of time in a studio, Sres looked around his own surroundings for inspiration. His debut album ‘Jeopardy’ is the sound of his home peninsula of Brasilia, a place imbued with architecture and history. Completed over the course of two months, ‘Jeopardy’ is a record that feels as exposed and organic as his immediate environment: open fields and landforms but also empty buildings surrounded by areas of urban decay.
Taking off where the previous EPs started, ‘Jeopardy’ feels more structured and affecting, aiming to create eerie soundscapes and resting on an axis of dissonance, noise and melody. An experiment with space and silence without forsaking any of the intensity and stylistic nod that made the earlier work such a powerful statement of ambient moments in constant tension with jagged elements.
From the rattling drones of ‘Non accolade’ to the euphoric marching-drum of ‘Numb by frost’, the record steps its way between a minimalist approach and deeply textured pieces. The lead track ‘Drag’ is a melancholic meditation centered around modular beats and chiming bells; ‘Wanderlust’ sees Sres weave and loop choral voice samples to create a hypnotic hymn; while ‘Roommates have it’ features manipulated field recordings around the sound of broken synths.
